Perhaps one the areas most benefiting from Charlotte's surging expansion, Union County has become the fastest-growing county in North Carolina as new shops, restaurants and other businesses spread farther east along the Highway 74 commercial corridor. Offering lower taxes and a more rural atmosphere, the county is fast becoming an extremely popular residential area for those commuting into Charlotte to work.
Located within Union County are towns such as upscale Weddington, historic Waxhaw, and the county seat of Monroe. A handful of friendly small towns dot the less developed eastern side of the county, amid acres of rich farmland. The county and its municipalities are carefully planning new development to encourage economic growth while preserving quality of life.
With easy access to all the cultural and entertainment attractions of Charlotte, there's also plenty to do without ever leaving Union County. Cane Creek Park encompasses 1,050 acres of land and a 350-acre trophy bass lake, offering trails, camping, athletic fields, and fishing. Home to the largest equestrian population in the state, the Queen's Cup Steeplechase is held here every April, in the town of Mineral Springs. Wingate University in the town of Wingate, just a few miles east of Monroe, provides not only higher education opportunities, but also presents a variety of musical concerts, theatrical performances, literary events and art exhibits throughout the year.
